Based upon our exceptionally reliable testbed
system FLM1, the newly designed
FLM2IAM
is an individually addressable fault line monitoring system
which allows loudspeaker lines to be continually monitored for
short circuit and open circuit faults.
The
FLM2IAM
system monitors each and every loudspeaker feed for 2 seconds in
every 30 second period. The requirements of BS 7443, state that
a fault should be apparent within 90 seconds, with the
FLM2IAM
a fault will be detected within a period of 30 seconds.
Being individually addressable means that
there are no errors or cross talk. Digital encryption of the
test signal provides a personalised code for each of the
transponder units, so no false readings or cross talk between
units.
What the standards say
It is a requirement when designing Audio
Evacuation systems to meet BS7443 and BS5839 that
all critical audio paths be fully monitored in order to provide
both a visual and audible warning should a fault occur. This
monitoring has to be from the emergency microphone input to the
end of the loudspeaker lines.
Normally a test signal is injected into the
microphone feed and detected on a return line from the last
loudspeaker. This has the disadvantage that two extra cores are
needed for the return signal, adding to cable cost and making
retro fitting difficult.
How the FLM2IAM works
The
FLM2IAM
system eliminates the need for the return cores. At the last
loudspeaker a transponder unit is fitted which measures the test
signal and sends back the information digitally to the receiver
card. This uses the two cores from the cable, and requires no
additional cabling. The End-of-Line transponder unit requires no
additional power supply.
Although the KEL
FLM2IAM
works continuously, and the transponder units are self powered
from the test signal only. The only set-up required is to assure
that there is sufficient test signal to power the end of line
unit.
The system consists of three components:
The Transponder.
This is housed in a weatherproof box, and is
connected at the end of the loudspeaker line. This is self
powered and requires no external power supply.
The Receiver Card.
This combines the test signal generator and
signal receiving card.
The Rack Mounting Unit.
This is a 3u 19" rack unit containing the PSU, and allows for
connection of the monitoring system into the rest of the Audio
Evacuation system
